Dr Alan Murphy is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Maritime Engineering at Newcastle University, UK. He began his working life as a sea-going Officer in the UK Merchant Navy, later gaining his Degree and PhD at Newcastle and Southampton Universities, respectively.
Alan now leads a broad and unique portfolio of research on the theme of sustainable shipping, funded by the UK government, the European Union and Industry amongst others. This research includes tackling the issue of transitioning global and regional shipping to low-carbon futures, whilst mitigating and eliminating other forms of poisonous air-borne pollution. Outputs from this research have included policy recommendations for reducing air pollution from shipping to the European Union and technology transfer to industry, working with SMEs and larger companies to develop ship-board emissions monitoring products and environmental classification.
Alan is a Charted Engineer and a Fellow of both the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology. He also sits on the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, Environment Committee.
