Dr Edmund Hughes is the Head, Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency of IMO’s Marine Environment Division where he is responsible for all matters related to MARPOL Annex VI ‘Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships’, regulations on energy efficiency for ships and further work to address GHG emissions from international shipping. Prior to joining IMO in 2010 he was a safety and environmental policy specialist in the United Kingdom’s maritime administration, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) with responsibility for implementation into UK law of both international and European laws relating to shipping. He is a member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), is a Chartered Engineer, and has a doctorate in environmental pollution control from Cranfield University in the UK.
