Mr Tan Suan Jow is appointed the Dean of MPA Academy since 1 April 2017. He also holds the concurrent appointment of Director (Sustainability Office). Prior to this, Mr Tan was Director (Shipping Division) and Director of Marine.

As Dean of MPA Academy, the training arm of MPA, Mr Tan oversees the functional training of MPA officers as well as flagship executive and technical assistance programmes for the international maritime community. MPA Academy also regularly holds thought leadership events and invites prominent maritime leaders to give talks so as to share knowledge with personnel in the industry.

As the Director (Sustainability Office), he is entrusted to lead the maritime industry into clean, green, efficient and effective shipping operations that are sustainable into the future and keeping our environment clean and minimising wastage of resources. He is also responsible for the development of sustainable port in the Next Generation Port 2030 mega project.

Previously, as the Director (Shipping Division), Mr Tan was responsible for the safety and security of the Singapore flag ships, as well as the proper manning, living and working conditions of the seafarers on board the ships. The Training Standards Department under his charge was responsible for the proper training and certifications of seafarers. At the same time, he was promoting the quality growth of the Singapore Registry of Ships. He had a team of port State control surveyors to ensure visiting ships are in compliance with Singapore maritime regulations and IMO Conventions, and a small team of investigators to scrutinise maritime incidents and accidents in our waters or those involving Singapore flag ships elsewhere.

Before joining MPA, Mr Tan was a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Naval Officer and retires from the SAF on 3 January 2013. He graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from the University College of London, United Kingdom in 1990 and a Master of Science from the Naval Postgraduate School, USA in 2001.

During his distinguished 27 years career in the SAF, he has held various senior key Command and Staff appointments in the SAF. In recognition of his outstanding contribution and invaluable service, he was awarded the Commendation Medal (Military), the Long Service Medal (Military), the SAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medals (12 and 20 years), and the SAF Good Service Medal.
